It pays homage to the Jefferson Memorial, a majestic monument in Washington, D.C., built in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence. The monument's classical architecture, inspired by the timeless beauty of Roman architecture, features an imposing dome and elegant columns reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome. These venerable walls were built between 1939 and 1943, and inside stands an imposing statue of Jefferson, surrounded by quotes from his speeches and writings, a powerful symbol of his vision for democracy, freedom, and human rights. Like all issues in this series, the 2 oz and 5 oz versions are small independent masterpieces. The extremely high double-sided relief, combined with the warm antique finish, gives the coins an extraordinary depth effect.
